How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I’ve been doing CrossFit for about 2.5 years. Exercise has always been a hobby, but I had reservations about joining CrossFit. Looking back, I wish I started earlier. There are so many benefits: the physical & mental challenge of the workouts; the friendship, motivation and camaraderie that comes from doing a tough workout with others; the guided instruction from experienced coaches; and the excitement of personal progress. I just don’t think you can get all that in any other gym.
Favorite Movement?
I’m 6’4” so I’m always happy to wall ball or row. Overhead squats have become a favorite because of how much I’ve improved.
What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to start CrossFit?
Joining any gym is intimidating and CrossFit gyms seemingly more so. Once you get into Core City Fitness, though, you’ll regret that you ever waited. The owners, coaches, and members at CCF are so approachable and welcoming - it feels like I’ve known everyone for years. If you’re still unsure, it’s always nice to bring a friend or family member whenever you’re doing anything for the first time - that added support goes a long way.
Favorite thing about CCF?
Best part about CCF has to be the people. Owners and coaches are supportive, motivating and willing to go out of their way to see you reach your fitness goals. The athletes/members I’ve met have been great and, as the gym continues to grow, I’m looking forward to meeting more people. Also, the physical space is pretty incredible. It’s amazing what the CCF team has created during a pandemic.
What do you do when you’re not at CCF (job, hobbies, other fitness, etc)?
While I was serving in the Peace Corps in Madagascar I found a passion for bikes as transportation, so for the last 3+ years I’ve been working for MoGo, the bike share system in Metro Detroit. I work on operations and our equity programming. Outside of work and the gym, I’ve played hockey since I was a kid and I enjoy anything outdoors - hiking, biking, camping, water sports, etc.
What is your next big fitness goal?
I want to improve my form and speed on barbell movements, which would hopefully lead to a few more PRs. I’d love to get a few steps of a handstand walk, too.
