June 2021 Athlete of the Month

Michelle Mott

Coach’s Thoughts: There are two things that athletes can count on at the noon class: 1. We do not time cap workouts and 2. Michelle will have questions to ask. Michelle came to us from an athletic background and a desire to drastically make a change to her health and habits. Every day she comes to the gym looking to improve and can usually be found before or after classes working on her weaknesses. She’s already crushed her fear of box jumps, made substantial improvements on her olympic lifts and is getting closer to a pull up every day. Thank you for making our gym a happier place, Michelle! We can’t wait to see what you do next!

  1. How long have you been doing CrossFit?

I had made the decision in July 2020 to wake up and prioritize my health and fitness. I started tracking macros and hired a trainer. Around January 2021 I plateaued and found myself getting discouraged and only myself to support/motivate me. So I looked around and into CrossFit and I was intrigued. I toured a few places, but the first day intro course at Core City I knew I found a home. I was blown away by the coaches and people. That was in February and have been coming since, so roughly 5 months now.

  2. Favorite Movement?

Most definitely deadlifts or bench press. However, as I am learning how to properly move the barbell overhead, I could see clean and jerks being a favorite as I progress.

  3. What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to start CrossFit?

Just let all the self doubt and what if’s exit your mind.  Sign up for an intro class and give it a try. Understand no one expects you to know how to do any of it; that is what the coaches are for. And they are amazing at coaching all levels. I know it can seem scary and overwhelming at the beginning, but the beautiful thing about this sport that I have and continue to learn is you can scale, and everyone still cheers you on and supports you. Get through day one. Then day two and eventually you will be doing box jumps and feeling like you found family.

  4. Favorite thing about CCF?

Most definitely the coaches and community. The support on those days you doubt yourself or when your mind tells you not today, everyone picks you up. Everyone has become like family to me and I am doing things I didn’t think possible because of the guidance, but also the incredible community. Core City and CrossFit has changed my life physically, mentally and otherwise.

  5. What do you do when you’re not at CCF (job, hobbies, other fitness, etc)?

I am a mother to an amazing 7 year old who is also now loving CrossFit. (Thank you CCF). I am a Solution/Process Architect specifically related to IOT and Product Data Mgt software and started a side t-shirt business. When I’m not racing around, I try to do CrossFit weekdays, competitive volleyball or hit the road to find some good trails to hike and camp near.

  6. What is your next big fitness goal?

To be able to do a strict pull-up for the immediate next one and run a 5k without walking. Not sure which will come first. Ha. My daily lifetime goal is to keep showing up every day even on the bad ones
