Justin Hassen
Coach’s Thoughts: Justin is one of the friendliest people at our gym. This shows through in his openness and willingness to strike up a conversation with anyone about anything. But don’t let that big smile and jovial personality fool you, when it’s time to move some serious weight, that’s where Justin shines. His impressive strength is only matched by his t-shirt selection or the newest haircut he’s rocking. We’ve loved watching you continue to improve in gymnastics and have no doubts that you’ll keep showing up and working hard all while balancing a demanding schedule as a med student. You’re a joy to have as a member, congrats on being AOTM!
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
A close friend nagged me for years and I caved during the pandemic (one of my best decisions). Starting crossfit helped me understand that our health is largely in our control as I dropped weight, got better sleep, gained confidence, and scored better in school from some consistency in the gym and small changes in diet. I've kept this habit for 4 years after starting June 2020.
Favorite Movement?
Favorite movement is the clean and jerk. Feels good to put a bunch of movements together and move heavy weight.
What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to start CrossFit?
My advice to somebody starting out is to trust that you can scale any workout to your current ability, and know that you're joining a community of supportive people looking to help instead of judge you. Lean into the nervousness that comes with a new movement and celebrate when you push yourself regardless of if you think you should be doing more compared to other athletes, as it's a legit accomplishment that should not go unnoticed.
Favorite thing about CCF?
Members are all interesting as they come from diverse backgrounds and professions - there is never a dull conversation between breaks and crushing a workout.
What do you do when you’re not at CCF (job, hobbies, other fitness, etc)?
When not at CCF, I am either in the hospital or studying as I am a Med student at Wayne State. If not there, I'm likely spamming friends with memes, playing video games, hiking, or reading.
What is your next big fitness goal?
Get a muscle-up... maybe run longer than 2 miles...
